Guide
Key points
- Characters counts everything, including spaces and line breaks.
- In UTF-8, Korean characters take 3 bytes; some forms count them as 2.
- Before submitting, confirm with the form's own counter.
With spaces vs. without spaces
Characters counts everything, including spaces and line breaks. No spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. If a form says “1,000 characters including spaces”, use the first number.
- Emoji and combined characters (such as 👍🏻 with a skin tone) count as one character, the way they appear on screen.
- A line break counts as one character. “First line⏎second” is two lines.
- Words are the chunks separated by spaces or line breaks.
Why do UTF-8 bytes and “CJK = 2” bytes differ?
Byte limits depend on how a system stores text. In UTF-8, used by most of the web, English letters take 1 byte while Korean, Chinese and Japanese characters take 3. Some older forms, especially in Korea, count every non-Latin character as 2 bytes instead. For example, “안녕하세요 FailX” is 11 characters, 21 bytes in UTF-8 and 16 bytes with CJK counted as 2.
Tips for length-limited forms
- Check whether the limit is in characters or bytes.
- Leave about 10% headroom — sites differ in how they count line breaks.
- Before submitting, paste the text into the actual form and confirm its own counter.
Your text is counted in your browser and is never sent to or stored on our servers.
FAQ
Do line breaks count?
Yes — each line break counts as one character in the total. It is excluded from the no-spaces count.
How are emoji counted?
As one character, the way they appear on screen. In UTF-8 they take 4 bytes or more.
Is my text saved?
No. It is counted in your browser, never sent to our servers, and gone when you close the page.
