Guide
Key points
- Rates are mid-market reference rates, updated once a day.
- Banks and card networks add a spread or fee when you exchange.
- Abroad, paying in the local currency is usually cheaper than in your own (DCC).
Which rate is this?
These are mid-market reference rates (halfway between buy and sell prices), updated once a day. When you actually exchange money, banks and card networks add a spread or fee on top, so use this as a guide for budgeting rather than a quote.
Why the bank gives you less
- Cash exchange has the widest spread.
- Bank transfers are usually closer to the mid-market rate than cash.
- Widely traded currencies (USD, EUR, JPY) have small spreads; thinly traded ones can cost much more to exchange.
Tips for paying abroad
- If a card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion), decline — paying in the local currency is usually cheaper.
- Your card issuer may add a foreign transaction fee on top of the exchange rate.
FAQ
How often do rates update?
Once a day; the time of the last update is shown below the converter. These are not live market prices.
Why is my bank's rate different?
Banks add a spread on top of the reference rate for cash and transfers. This converter shows the midpoint.
Can I use it for budgeting a trip?
Yes, as an estimate. Expect to pay slightly more once exchange fees are applied.
