Internet Speed Test

Measure download and upload speed, ping (latency) and jitter — and see whether your connection is good enough for 4K video, video calls and online gaming.

Measures speed to the nearest Cloudflare data center (speed.cloudflare.com); during the test your browser exchanges data, including your IP address, with that server. On fast connections a test can use several hundred MB, so be careful on mobile data. Results vary with Wi-Fi, other devices on your network and time of day.

Guide

Key points

  • Measures download, upload, ping and jitter, and tells you what your connection can handle.
  • Tests against the nearest Cloudflare data center.
  • A test can use several hundred MB on fast connections — mind your mobile data.

What’s measured

  • Download: how fast you receive data — streaming, browsing, downloads.
  • Upload: how fast you send data — video calls, uploading photos and videos, backups.
  • Ping (latency): round-trip time to the server in milliseconds. Lower is better for games and calls.
  • Jitter: how much the ping varies. High jitter causes choppy calls and lag spikes.

Speed needed for common uses

  • 4K streaming: 25 Mbps download
  • Video calls: 4 Mbps down, 3 Mbps up, ping under 150 ms
  • Online gaming: 10 Mbps down, ping under 50 ms, jitter under 20 ms
  • Large file transfers: 100 Mbps down, 20 Mbps up

For an accurate result

  • Use a wired connection or sit close to the router.
  • Pause downloads, streaming and backups on other devices.
  • Turn off any VPN.
  • Test a few times at different times of day.

FAQ

Why is it slower than my plan?

Wi-Fi is normally slower than a cable. If a wired test is still far below your plan, restart the router and contact your provider.

What's a good ping?

Under 20 ms is excellent; under 50 ms is fine for most online games.

How much data does a test use?

It scales with your speed: tens of MB on slow lines, up to several hundred MB on gigabit connections.
